"But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God,
even to them that believe on his name:
"Which were born, not of
blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God." (John 1: 12-13)
This verse makes plan that it is God's will, not ours, which matters.
"For it is God
which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure." (Philippians 2: 13)
The Christian life is actually easier than plowing through twelve steps, the last three of which members are expected to work on a frequent basis. Yet even Jesus made his calling and our part very simple:
"Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?
"Jesus answered and said
unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent." (John 6: 28-29)
We are called to believe on Jesus, who was sent to be the propitiation for our sins (1 John 4: 10), not just a means for overcoming alcohol abuse.
The very notion of turning our will and life over to God is nonsense. Before we are saved, we had not life, but were spiritually dead (Ephesians 2: 1). Jesus came to give us life:
"The thief cometh not,
but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have
life, and that they might have it more abundantly." (John 10: 10)
and of course:
"Jesus saith unto him, I
am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." (John 14: 6)
We need life, people! Jesus is the life eternal that every man craves but cannot create for himself!
